Making the next action clear

A status label is only a start. A useful action also makes ownership, missing inputs and the evidence of completion visible.

The problem with “in progress”

A request arrives. Someone investigates it. A decision is needed before the work can continue. If the only shared information is “in progress,” the person waiting cannot tell whether to contribute, decide or simply wait. The problem is not necessarily a lack of effort. It may be that the next action and its dependency have never been made explicit.

Give a blocker a useful shape

Consider a synthetic request to improve a handoff checklist. The coordinator has drafted the checklist, but it needs a decision about which exceptions require approval. “Blocked” is accurate, yet incomplete. A more useful record states the action, the responsible role, the question being resolved and the input needed to proceed. It gives the approver something concrete to answer and the coordinator a clear point at which to resume.

Connect completion to evidence

The same discipline applies at the other end. In this example, “done” could mean that a draft exists, that it has been reviewed or that a team has tried it. Those are different outcomes. The proposed design connects an action to its agreed completion condition and supporting evidence. A document can hold the checklist; the action record can explain its owner, dependency and review state. The two should help someone resume the work without reconstructing it from messages.

A design question, not a finished feature

Clear next actions are a priority in planning IAC's own sales and client-delivery application. The proposed fields and states still need to be tested against a real engagement. This illustration is a workflow concept, not a screenshot of a released application or evidence of a customer result. The next useful step is to walk one handoff from request through review and identify which information people actually need at each decision.

The next question

What is the smallest action record that lets the next person continue confidently without another status meeting?
